Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on International Relations has commended President Cyril Ramaphosa and International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola for choosing engagement over confrontation in response to threats by US President Donald Trump.
Trump recently threatened to cut funding to South Africa, citing misunderstandings over the country’s expropriation laws and accusing South Africa of unfair treatment of certain groups.
Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations Supra Mahumapelo says, “As the Portfolio Committee, we want to commend both the president and the minister for the mature manner, within the context of diplomacy, in which they handled the irresponsible utterances by the United States President Donald Trump. We want to applaud them because there’s nothing that beats engagement.”
Mahumapelo adds, “South Africa must remain steadfast in ensuring that they come to the table with the president of the US to discuss these lies that are being peddled by right-wingers like AfriForum from here in South Africa.”
The committee’s statement highlights South Africa’s commitment to diplomatic engagement amid international tensions.
