Сhina discovers oilfield in South China Sea

New deepwater discovery holds over 100 million tonnes of oil

A significant new oilfield, Huizhou 19-6, has been discovered in the eastern part of the South China Sea, with estimated reserves exceeding 100 million tonnes. This marks China’s first large-scale terrigenous hydrocarbon deposit found in deep to ultra-deep layers.

Located about 170 km from Shenzhen (Guangdong Province) at an average water depth of 100 metres, the field has shown strong production potential during test drilling, yielding 413 barrels of crude oil and 68,000 cubic metres of natural gas per day.

Exploration in deepwater zones faces challenges such as high temperatures, extreme pressure, and complex geological conditions. However, experts note that 60 per cent of the world’s newly discovered hydrocarbon reserves in recent years have come from deep layers, making them a key focus for future energy development.

According to
CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS, this is the second major discovery in the region over the years, further confirming the South China Sea’s substantial oil and gas potential.
