Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world (8 514 215,3 km ²).
60% of the territory is occupied by Amazonia – the main “lungs” of our planet: here the world’s biggest rainforest is located. Other main ecoregions of the country are serrado (savanna), Atlantic forests, caatinga (dry tropical thin forest), and pantanal (boggy area). Brazil is the world record-holder by the quantity of bird and ape species.
The city of Brasilia is the capital of the country. The official language is Portuguese.
Brazil is a presidential republic. The head of state is elected by universal direct vote for a period of 4 years. The President is also the Commander-in-Chief and the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. The country currently consists of one capital federal district and 26 states, each of which is managed by its own governor.
The economy of Brazil in its volume and GDP growth is in the world’s Top 10. According to the IMF, the GDP (PPP) of the country in 2017 made 3240 billion dollars.

Brazil is the world’s fifth biggest country by population – more than 200 million people live here. The Brazilian Institute of geography and statistics, which conducts population censuses, has distinguished 5 main ethnic categories:
– Brancos (“White”) – descendants of the European immigrants
– Pretos, Negros (“Black”) – Brazilians of the African origin
– Amarelos (“Yellow”) – people of Asian descent
– Indios (“Indians”) – indigenous people
– Pardos (“Brown”) – the mixed group
This is the country of urbanists: 8 of 10 Brazilians live in cities, the largest of which are São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.
National currency of Brazil is real (100 centavos). All banknotes have on their faces a head of a statue with a laurel wreath – an official symbol of the Republic. And on a rear sides there are the animals living in the territory of the country. For example, the note of 1 real depicts a hummingbird, 10 reals – a green-winged macaw, and 50 reals – a jaguar.
