Russia advances domestic grape breeding with 10 new high-yield varieties
These varieties demonstrate high yields, strong disease resistance, and resilience against pests
Russia is making strides in domestic grape breeding, with 10 new grape varieties added to the State Register in 2024. Of these, nine are the result of Russian research and development, as reported by the
Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.
Among the newly registered varieties are “Valentina”, “Zolotse”, “Podarok Shatilova”, and “Sukholimansky Bely”, which are specifically adapted to the country’s diverse climate conditions. These varieties demonstrate high yields, strong disease resistance, and resilience against pests, making them well-suited for cultivation across different regions of Russia.
One of the most notable breakthroughs is “Sibiryak Potapenko”, a grape variety developed in Eastern Siberia that withstands extreme frost and remains resistant to diseases. Meanwhile, “Solaris Tamansky”, registered in the North Caucasus, has been recognised as an ideal choice for producing high-quality dry wines.
The majority of these advancements come from research institutions and agricultural enterprises in Russia’s southern regions. However, in 2024, significant contributions were also made by breeders from Central Russia, the Urals, and Siberia.
