Joburg council to debate no confidence motion against Mayor

The City of Johannesburg Council is today expected to debate three motions of no confidence, including one against Mayor Dada Morero, brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA).

Morero says he is confident he will survive the motion.

The DA is also targeting Chief Whip Sthembiso Zungu, while Al Jama-ah is pushing for the removal of the Speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu.

However, Morero says they are heading into the council confident with the backing of parties within the Government of Local Unity.

Morero says they need 136 votes to defeat the motion, and they currently hold 140.

DA Joburg Caucus Leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, says Morero has failed in his duties, leaving Johannesburg residents to endure chaos and hardship.

“He’s failing at his job and with every failure. Residents of Johannesburg have had to endure more hardship and more chaos. It cannot be that those elected to power are allowed to drive the city into the ground without consequences. As set out in our motion, the executive mayor has failed to ensure that he conducts his duties in a fair and impartial manner. The executive mayor has failed to conduct himself in a manner that promotes democracy.”
