Indonesia to launch project to produce batteries for electric vehicles
Indonesia is set to commence construction of a major integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery facility in East Halmahera, North Maluku, with President Prabowo Subianto scheduled to lead the groundbreaking ceremony on 29 June. This is reported by
Antara News.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the project is backed by substantial investment from a prominent battery producer based in China. Valued at approximately US$6 billion, the initiative is being hailed as the first of its kind globally in terms of scale and integration.
The facility will combine several key stages of the battery supply chain in one location – including mineral extraction, metal refining, high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL), and the production of key battery components such as precursors and cathodes.
“This will be the first project of its kind and scale in the world,” the Minister stated, expressing confidence that the project will help reduce the cost of EV battery production in Indonesia.
This venture is part of a wider strategy to develop 18 downstream industrial projects across the country, with a combined value nearing US$45 billion. These include developments in nickel, bauxite, oil refining, energy storage, coal gasification, as well as agriculture, fisheries, and forestry.
