Expert highlights importance of climate dialogue between North and South at BRICS forum

Specialist discusses significance of international cooperation for preserving polar regions

In an exclusive interview with TV BRICS, Maksim Dankin, General Director of the Project Office for Arctic Development (PORA), emphasised the importance of the BRICS summit as a tool for international climate cooperation. According to him, the association’s platform opens up opportunities for promoting the sustainable development agenda, including in the Arctic.

He noted that exchanging experiences with southern countries allows for a more comprehensive assessment of the processes taking place in the polar regions.

“Brazil, as the host country of this summit, is, of course, more of an Antarctic country, but at the same time, it has a large body of knowledge on the study of the Antarctic climate. In this regard, the exchange of knowledge allows us to look more clearly and comprehensively at the processes taking place in the Arctic,” the expert said.

The expert expressed hope that the BRICS summit will give impetus to the formation of joint investment mechanisms related to the development of low-carbon and green technologies.

The meeting of the heads of state and government of the BRICS countries will take place in Rio de Janeiro on 6–7 July and will be the main event of Brazil’s presidency of the association.
