Ethiopia is experiencing increasing interest from international electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers and suppliers eager to enter the market and invest in the sector, said Bareo Hassen, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Transport and Logistics, said during an interview with
ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

The government has introduced several supportive measures aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and tapping into Ethiopia’s renewable energy potential, Hassen stressed. These efforts include the implementation of the National Electric Vehicle Strategy and the promotion of policies that encourage the transition to electric transport.

The Ethiopian authorities are also backing initiatives to convert fuel-powered vehicles to electric ones, alongside encouraging technologies that lower fuel use and emissions. 

As a result of these initiatives, the number of electric vehicles in Ethiopia now exceeds 115,000, and more than 15 companies are actively engaged in local assembly. 

In this context, Hassen emphasise that the favourable policy environment and national focus on clean transport have drawn the attention of global EV producers, who see Ethiopia as an emerging market with significant investment potential.
