Ethiopia sets 5.6 million job creation target for 2025/26 with expanded overseas employment plans

The government will invest in skills development and pre-departure training

The Government of Ethiopia has announced plans to create 5.6 million job opportunities in the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year (2025/26) as part of its national development strategy aimed at accelerating economic growth and enhancing social stability. This is reported by
Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

Minister for Planning and Development Fitsum Assefa stated that job creation will remain a core pillar of the government’s priorities, with a dual approach focusing on domestic employment and expanded overseas opportunities for Ethiopian citizens. The initiative is underpinned by policies to promote inclusive economic participation and support sustainable livelihoods.

To boost domestic employment, the government plans to assist 429,175 micro and small enterprises (MSEs), which are regarded as vital drivers of grassroots economic activity.

As part of the international dimension of the plan, Ethiopia intends to increase the number of destination countries for Ethiopian migrant workers from five to eight. The government will invest in skills development and pre-departure training to enhance the competitiveness of Ethiopian workers abroad and ensure alignment with international labour market standards.

Of the total 5.6 million new jobs, 800,000 are projected to be created through overseas employment. This includes coordinated training programmes and institutional collaboration aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights and improving the quality of employment.
