UAE and Bhutan launch AI initiative to drive economic growth

The collaboration focuses on fostering entrepreneurship, supporting sustainable tourism, and enhancing agricultural productivity

In a step toward exploring the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for inclusive development, the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bhutan hosted a high-level workshop titled “AI for Progress”.

The two-day event was held in Bhutan’s capital, Thimphu, and gathered policymakers, technical experts, and development practitioners to devise innovative, locally applicable AI solutions. This was reported by the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the UAE.

The workshop focused on three priority areas: fostering entrepreneurship, supporting sustainable tourism, and boosting agricultural productivity. Bhutan was chosen as the first country to pilot this initiative due to its dedication to innovation and cost-effective, locally tailored technologies, according to the report.

The event was attended by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Foreign Minister Lyonpo D. N. Dhungyel. Representing the UAE, Assistant Foreign Minister for Advanced Science and Technology Affairs, Omran Sharaf, emphasised the UAE’s commitment to tech diplomacy and sustainable development through AI.

Sharaf highlighted the alignment between Bhutan’s forward-thinking digital vision and the UAE’s technical expertise as a foundation for a holistic, results-driven partnership.
