Brazil unveils major housing investment for Favelas

The scheme will support 49 low-income areas in 32 municipalities

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has launched a major new phase of Brazil’s urban development programme, pledging US$860 million to improve living conditions in informal settlements across 12 states. This is reported by
Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.

The “Periferia Viva” scheme, part of the federal government’s Novo PAC 2025, will support 49 low-income areas in 32 municipalities, delivering housing and infrastructure for an estimated 375,000 families.

Speaking in the neighbourhood of Rochdale, in Osasco, Sao Paulo, Lula confirmed that the latest funding would provide more than 22,000 new or improved homes. Rochdale itself will receive US$15.6 million for drainage, sewage, water, lighting, and 166 new homes.

The scheme also includes environmental recovery, land regularisation, and targeted support for nearly 500 families.
