The Board of Directors of the New Development Bank (NDB) of BRICS has approved a loan of 1.448 billion yuan (about 209 million) for the implementation of the Taiyuan Wusu carbon-neutral airport project in Shanxi Province, China. This is reported by the official website of the bank.
The project involves transforming Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TWIA) into China’s first zero-carbon airport. To achieve this, it is planned to use solar and geothermal energy, as well as improve the facility’s energy efficiency.
It is noted that TWIA will be the first airport in the country to install solar panels with a total capacity of more than 100 MW, the first to test PEDF systems (pPV-Energy Storage-Direct Current-Flexible Loads), and the first regional hub with fully renewable heating and cooling.
It is expected that the experience gained during the implementation of the project will serve as a model for the introduction of sustainable airport operating practices in NBR member countries.
