Kazakhstan is undertaking a sweeping upgrade of its railway network in a bid to strengthen its position as a key international transit hub, officials confirmed this week according to
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.
The country plans to modernise 5,000 km of track and carry out repairs on a further 11,000 km by 2030, according to the Ministry of Transport. Five major infrastructure projects are currently underway, with two expected to be completed ahead of schedule this year.
Transit volumes are forecast to more than double over the next five years, reaching 67 million tonnes by 2029. As part of this strategy, Kazakhstan is also expanding its network of logistics terminals and pursuing new agreements to develop the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, a key corridor linking China to Europe via the Caspian Sea.
The Ministry of Transport noted that Kazakhstan’s current fleet of nearly 2,000 locomotives and 142,000 freight wagons will be expanded significantly by 2029 to accommodate increasing demand across the region.
