Belarusian Foreign Ministry reports on country’s active participation in work of SCO

Belarus has significantly strengthened its presence in all areas of activity of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). This was stated by the country’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Lukashevich in an interview with
BelTA, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to him, the republic’s participation in the SCO is of historical significance.

“Participation in 25 meetings of SCO ministers and agencies and 26 working group events has been secured. […] In May this year, six Belarusian universities joined the SCO University,” Lukashevich said.

The first deputy minister noted that participation in the organisation allows Belarus to implement strategic priorities, develop multifaceted cooperation and contribute to joint projects. He added that following the upcoming SCO summit in Tianjin, China, decisions are planned to be made to strengthen the institutional capacity of the association.

“In the economic sphere, we hope to promote initiatives to simplify customs procedures, stimulate mutual investment, develop the digital economy and transport connectivity, and support green energy. We are also ready to work on expanding humanitarian exchanges,” the diplomat said.

The SCO summit will take place on 31 August and 1 September. It will be attended by the Heads of state and government of more than 20 countries. Among them are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, and others. Belarusian leader Aleksander Lukashenko also plans to attend the meeting.
