Brazil and Nigeria sign Air Service Agreement during presidential visit in Brasilia

Brazil and Nigeria signed a Bilateral Air Service Agreement on 25 August during the official visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Brasilia. The signing ceremony at the Planalto Palace was attended by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and senior authorities from both countries.

The agreement, formally known as the Air Services Agreement, sets out modern rules for aviation between the two nations, including overflight rights, technical stops, route definitions, operational safety standards, and fair competition measures. It opens the way for carriers from Brazil and Nigeria to expand services for both passengers and cargo.

President Lula described the accord as part of a broader effort to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, underlining Brazil’s commitment to free trade and multilateral cooperation. He also reiterated his support for Nigeria’s participation in the G20 and for the inclusion of African countries in a reformed United Nations Security Council.

President Tinubu’s state visit marked a new phase in bilateral cooperation. Alongside the aviation agreement, Brazil and Nigeria also signed accords in the fields of science and technology and foreign relations. Lula stressed that, with a population of over 230 million and a leading role in Africa, Nigeria is an essential partner in promoting South–South cooperation and advancing a multipolar world order.

The Agreement is expected to create new routes, boost tourism, and facilitate business links between South America and Africa, as reported by the
official website of Brazil’s government.
