South Africa outlines digital economy vision ahead of G20 summit

South Africa has outlined its vision for a more inclusive and competitive digital economy ahead of the G20 summit to be held in Johannesburg in November this year. Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi emphasised the role of communications, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI), reports
IOL.

Malatsi said digital transformation has the potential to unlock economic opportunities and equip citizens with new skills.

“Digital inclusion is a top priority. We have launched initiatives […], focused on extending broadband to underserved communities, schools, clinics, and public institutions,” he noted.

He outlined four strategic focus areas under South Africa’s G20 Digital Economy Presidency: connectivity, digital public infrastructure (DPI), innovation ecosystems for MSMEs, and ethical AI. The government’s aim, he said, is to build a “dynamic, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy that empowers citizens and unlocks opportunities for businesses of all sizes.”

South Africa’s progress includes expanding digital payment adoption, driven by mobile money, fintech platforms, and instant transfer schemes.

He also confirmed that government is developing digital ID systems, secure e-payment platforms, and integrated public service portals under the “Digital Transformation Roadmap for Government”, to improve transparency and service delivery.
