China has donated US$1 million to Nigeria to aid communities affected by the devastating floods that have swept across several states in recent months. This is reported by the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), a partner of TV BRICS.
The announcement was made during a formal signing ceremony in Abuja, where the Chinese government, represented by Ambassador Yu Dunhai, exchanged official documents with Nigeria’s Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
Expressing his condolences, Ambassador Yu noted that both nations have recently endured natural disasters and underscored the mutual solidarity that has long characterised China-Nigeria relations. “In times of difficulty, China and Nigeria always stand together,” he said, reaffirming China’s confidence in Nigeria’s resilience and recovery efforts.
The donation comes in the wake of severe flooding that has impacted at least 25 Nigerian states during the 2025 rainy season.
According to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), over 209,000 people have been affected, with at least 228 deaths, 495 injuries, and more than 71,000 displaced.
Badly affected states include Imo, Adamawa, Rivers, Lagos, Borno, and Kaduna. According to
NAN, one of the worst-hit areas was Mokwa in Niger State, where a deadly flash flood in May claimed more than 200 lives, destroyed thousands of homes.
Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, welcomed the donation as timely and targeted, stating that the funds will benefit communities hardest hit by the floods.
