Expert names three key topics for SCO summit

At the upcoming summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), heads of state and government of participating countries will focus on three key topics: economic integration, security, and humanitarian cooperation. This was stated in an exclusive commentary to TV BRICS by Andrey Khlutkov, Director of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) St. Petersburg, Professor.

According to him, special attention will be paid to settlements in national currencies and the implementation of large-scale transport projects, including the China-Central Asia-Russia corridor and the Silk Road. These initiatives are already demonstrating the effect of accelerated logistics, the expert added.

In the field of security, as Khlutkov noted, the leaders of the SCO countries will focus on combating terrorism and countering cyber threats, which remains one of the organisation’s main priorities. In addition, humanitarian cooperation, including educational ties, cultural exchange and cooperation in science and technology, will occupy a significant place on the agenda, he believes.

Khlutkov stressed that the discussion of all these issues will be backed up by specific documents.

“The signing of two major documents has already been announced: the Tianjin Declaration, which will enshrine synchronisation in key areas – strengthening cooperation in the field of security, developing energy and transport corridors, the digital economy and countering terrorism, as well as the SCO Development Strategy until 2035, which will define the main vectors of joint work in the coming decade,” Andrey Khlutkov stated.

The SCO summit will be held in Tianjin, China, on 31 August and 1 September. More than 20 heads of state and government, as well as leaders of 10 international organisations, are expected to attend the event.
