Russian Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin held talks with Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali. They discussed the construction of the Rasht–Astara line, which is part of the North-South International Transport Corridor (ITC). This is reported by the Ministry’s
press service.
“This project will connect the railways of Azerbaijan and Iran and will allow for the transport of at least 15 million tonnes of cargo annually,” the statement said.
It is noted that the parties considered measures to develop transport along the North-South ITC. Work is continuing to remove infrastructure constraints, create favourable tariff conditions and form cargo flows. It is specified that mixed transport with transfer to trucks is used on the western route, while regular container trains already run on the eastern route.
According to the statement, the countries are developing road transport. In 2024, their indicator grew by 12.8 per cent.
The development of cooperation in maritime transport was also discussed: interaction between shipping and port companies, multimodal transport with a single rate, and the possible launch of cruises on the Caspian Sea. It is noted that direct flights between Russia and Iran have resumed.
