A team of Vietnamese scientists has identified a new plant species in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, in Quang Tri province, reports
Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.
The finding introduces Decaneuropsis phongnhakebangensis, a woody climbing shrub from the Asteraceae family. Locally named “Bach Dau Phong Nha – Ke Bang”, the species can grow up to five metres high, with obovate or oval leaves and clusters of funnel-shaped, dark purple flowers.
The discovery was made during a joint botanical survey conducted in December 2024 in limestone mountain areas of the park, particularly around Hang Va – Nuoc Nut at 777 metres above sea level.
The survey, part of a cooperation programme led by the Institute of Tropical Biology of Vietnam, collected 520 specimen codes covering around 250 vascular plant species from 90 families. Following analysis and comparison, researchers confirmed the plant as an entirely new species, previously unrecorded in scientific literature.
