Indonesia launches nationwide programme to modernise coastal fishing villages

The Indonesian government plans to modernise and economically empower 1,100 coastal villages through its Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP) programme, with implementation phased through 2027, Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono announced, as reported by
Antara News.

The initiative, conceived by President Prabowo Subianto, aims to boost productivity and improve the welfare of coastal communities.

Trenggono explained that the ministry will equip participating villages with modern infrastructure, including docks, fish markets, cold storage facilities, ship repair workshops, auction centres, training hubs, and culinary areas.

He expressed optimism that the programme would create more organised villages capable of producing high-value, competitive products, ultimately raising fishermen’s incomes.

This year alone, the ministry aims to develop at least 100 KNMPs, selecting from 910 proposals received nationwide through a fair and transparent process.
