Agroindustrial technology hub opens in Brazil to boost greener aviation

The Brazilian Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, joined President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to inaugurate a new Agroindustrial Technology and Innovation Centre in Montes Claros, northern Minas Gerais. The authorities
announced that the facility is dedicated to research and development of the macauba palm, an innovative feedstock for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Green Diesel.

Backed by an investment of US$ 60 million, largely financed by Brazil’s national development bank BNDES, the centre is part of a programme to establish the country’s first fully integrated biorefinery. The wider project includes a refinery in Bahia and large-scale cultivation of macaúba on degraded land across Minas Gerais and Bahia.

From 2028, annual production is expected to reach one billion litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, generating up to 85,000 jobs. The venture forms part of the federal government’s growth acceleration plan and is central to its green industrial strategy.

Minister Silveira highlighted the centre as a milestone for Brazil’s decarbonisation agenda, tied to the “Fuel of the Future” law passed in 2024. The legislation sets binding emissions-reduction targets for aviation from 2027, providing regulatory certainty for investors and encouraging diversification of raw materials such as soy, palm, macauba and ethanol.
