Brazilian students win four medals at International Astronomy Olympiad in India

Five Brazilian high school students won multiple awards at the 18th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), held in Mumbai, India. The team brought home a gold medal, two silver medals, a bronze, two trophies, and an honourable mention.

The team’s achievements were
recognised by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Luca Pieroni Pimenta won the gold medal, as well as two trophies for the best group performance and the best observational test. Franklin da Silva Costa and Francisco Carluccio de Andrade earned silver medals, while Lucas Amaral Jensen took bronze. Giovanna Karolinna Ribeiro de Queiroz was awarded an honourable mention.

The students were selected for the international competition after excelling in the Brazilian Astronomy and Astronautics Olympiad (OBA), organised by the Brazilian Astronomical Society (SAB) with support from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
