Brazil launches free cooking gas scheme for low-income families

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has launched a new scheme, Gás do Povo (“People’s Gas”), which will provide free cooking gas to low-income families across Brazil. This is reported by Toda Palavra, a partner of TV BRICS.

The initiative, unveiled this week in Belo Horizonte, is expected to reach around 15.5 million households. Lula signed a provisional measure to establish the programme, which takes immediate effect but must be approved by Congress within 120 days. Distribution of gas cylinders is scheduled to begin on 30 October.

Under the scheme, eligible families will collect 13kg gas cylinders directly from government-accredited retailers, rather than receiving financial aid. The government argues this shift will improve efficiency and transparency.

Officials say the new policy will protect public health by reducing indoor pollution from biomass and the risks linked to burning alcohol. The programme will be fully funded by the federal budget.
