Malaysia and Russia’s bilateral ties have strengthened considerably this year, driven by high-level visits and discussions that have opened new avenues of cooperation, Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl Latypov said. This is reported by
BERNAMA, a partner of TV BRICS.
He noted that the state visit to Russia by Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, in August and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official trip to Moscow in May provided fresh impetus to bilateral collaboration.
Trade between the two countries currently stands at around US$3 billion, according to the envoy. “Our main task is to explore and utilise this potential to increase bilateral trade,” he told.
Efforts are also underway to restore direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Moscow, an initiative first raised by Prime Minister Anwar during his visit. Latypov said some technical issues remain but expressed hope services could resume by 2026.
“Malaysia has beautiful weather and clean seas. We need to do more to promote it in Russia, and at the same time, we are developing halal tourism facilities in Russia to welcome more Malaysians,” he said.
On regional affairs, Latypov reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Malaysia’s ASEAN chairmanship and its role as a new BRICS partner country. “We highly appreciate Malaysia’s decision to become a partner country of BRICS. We are confident Malaysia will contribute significantly to strengthening ties between ASEAN,” he said.
He described BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) as vital platforms for the Global South.
