At the Jalisco Zoo in Mexico, a baby turtle of the species Kinosternon vogti, known as the Vallarta turtle, has been bred for the first time. This is the first successful breeding of an endangered species in captivity, according to the
El-Maipo internet portal, a partner of TV BRICS.
The newborn turtle weighed 2.8 grams. Six more eggs are currently developing in the incubator. Individuals confiscated from poachers were used for breeding. They were placed in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat.
The Vallarta turtle is the smallest species of turtle in the world. Adult individuals reach a length of only 10 cm. The species was discovered in 2018 and immediately received endangered status. According to experts, no more than 500 individuals remain in the wild.
