Moscow-Kazakhstan Business Forum set course for economic integration between countries

Moscow-Kazakhstan Business Dialogue was held in Moscow with the participation of a delegation from the Almaty region. The event brought together representatives of government and business. Participants discussed the expansion of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

At the end of the first quarter of 2025, trade turnover between Moscow and Kazakhstan grew by 14.2 per cent, reaching US$1.9 billion. Sergey Cheremin, Minister of the Moscow Government and Head of the Department of Foreign Economic and International Relations, spoke about the importance of Moscow’s business in bilateral relations.

“Moscow ranks first among the constituent entities of the Russian Federation in terms of investment attractiveness. […] Our foreign trade turnover with Kazakhstan is US$28 billion. Approximately one-third of this, US$9 billion, is generated by Moscow residents who have foreign economic partnerships with their partners in Kazakhstan,” he said.

Cheremin also emphasised that Kazakhstan is “also a partner in terms of the development of high technologies and creative industries.”

This view was supported by the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Russia, Dauren Abayev. He highlighted the country’s high rates of economic development and priorities for cooperation with Moscow.

“In the first half of this year, Kazakhstan’s economy showed steady growth of 6 per cent, which is the best indicator in the last 14 years. […] In 2024, Russia became the leader in investments in Kazakhstan with a record result of US$4 billion. More than 170 projects worth over US$53 billion have been implemented in this area,” he added.

Kuanysh Bakhytuly, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Industrial and Innovative Development of the Almaty Region, noted the contribution of one of the key regions to this partnership. He highlighted the region’s unique advantages for investors and its key role in international logistics: the Western Europe-China road corridor passes through the region.

“Sea delivery of cargo from China to Europe takes about 45 days, while the rail route takes only 14 days. As a result, 92 per cent of logistics transport in this direction passes through the territory [of the Almaty region – Ed.],” he said.

The forum is a platform for strengthening business ties between the business communities of the two countries. The parties have already identified priorities in trade, digitalisation and tourism, which has led to concrete results in economic cooperation.
