Brazil pioneers innovative mapping of urban green spaces

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to map urban green spaces across the country. This project seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the extent and distribution of green areas within Brazilian cities, offering valuable data for urban planning and environmental management. This is reported by
Agencia Brasil.

The methodology aligns with the Brazilian Forest Code’s definition of urban green spaces, encompassing public or private areas with vegetation (natural or restored) that are designated for purposes other than housing or subdivisions in urban planning. The classification of green areas also follows guidelines from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, categorising them into different types such as parks, plazas, and green strips.

The mapping process considers a delimitation based on international standards, including population density and population size in continuous areas, as defined by UN-Habitat. The initiative also utilises data from collaborative mapping projects to identify the presence of various green areas. This data is cross-referenced with satellite imagery to confirm vegetation, providing a more accurate and detailed picture of urban green spaces.

Recent studies have identified 7,096.37 hectares of urban green spaces, accounting for 45 per cent of the municipality’s urbanised area when considering an 800-metre radius around the urban centre. Within the intra-urban area alone, the size is reduced to 6,036.73 hectares, representing 38 per cent of the city’s urbanised areas.

Experts emphasised that this mapping project aims to develop a high-quality dataset for all of Brazil, leveraging available resources and simple processing techniques. The resulting data can then be used to train artificial intelligence algorithms, enabling more automated and efficient mapping updates in the future.
