Experts call for education to drive innovation and development in Africa

University of South Africa (Unisa) Vice Chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula, has encouraged academics, policymakers and industry leaders to reflect on the transformative role of education in driving development and innovation in an era of digitisation and shifting global dynamics. This is reported by
African Times, a partner of TV BRICS.

Speaking at the Catalytic Niche Area (CNA) Research Symposium, themed “Innovating for the Future: Integrating Technology, Sustainability, and Humanity”, LenkaBula encouraged participants to reflect on the transformative value of education. “We also need to ask ourselves what the value of education is, especially in higher education and in the context of the shifting geopolitical context and digitisation,” she said.

Thembelihle Mapipa, from the Moses Kotane Research Institute, underlined the importance of skills development for emerging sectors, particularly maritime. “Through coordinated programmes, research funding and collaboration, the institute strengthens local research capacity while aligning with provincial priorities to drive inclusive development,” she noted.

The CNA Symposium brought together academics, policymakers and industry leaders committed to collaborative action and innovation, underscoring the central role of education and research in shaping Africa’s future.
