President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed that the United Nations General Assembly adopt a resolution proclaiming 22 April as the International Day of Planetary Greening. Speaking at the General Debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, he underscored the urgency of coordinated global efforts to safeguard ecosystems amid accelerating climate change. This is reported by
Kazinform, a partner of TV BRICS.
He recalled that Kazakhstan, together with Saudi Arabia and the World Bank, convened the One Water Summit last year and that Astana will host a Regional Environmental Summit in partnership with the UN in April 2026 to promote sustainable solutions and prevent water crises.
“In this context, we urge member states to support the resolution declaring 22 April the International Day of Planetary Greening,” Tokayev said, emphasising the need for solidarity in building a sustainable future.
Among national initiatives, Tokayev cited the new large-scale national environmental initiative, which unites millions of volunteers in clean-up activities, waste reduction, and ecological education. He also reminded delegates that, on Kazakhstan’s initiative, the UN has designated 2026 as the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development.
