Reforms in renewable energy and waste management are transforming South Africa’s economy by creating sustainable jobs and attracting multi-million-dollar investments, said the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dion George.
He explained that what many consider waste can be converted into a valuable resource capable of strengthening the country’s economic resilience, according to
IOL.
During the 2024/25 financial year, the ministry processed 99 per cent of environmental impact assessments, prioritising energy projects in response to the ongoing national power crisis.
In terms of waste management, Extended Producer Responsibility regulations have created over 24,000 jobs and supported 47,000 recyclers since 2022. George highlighted that each recycling company and solar plant represents a step towards inclusive prosperity.
He also noted that key environmental infrastructure projects are supported by joint investments with the Treasury and the World Bank, exceeding US$5.3 billion, reinforcing South Africa’s drive towards a greener and more sustainable economy.
