India to nearly double number of Airports to 350 by 2047

India plans to expand its number of airports from 163 in 2025 to more than 350 by 2047 as part of its Aviation Vision 2047, the government announced on Thursday, according to
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The government expects the aviation sector to support 25 million jobs by 2047, with significant growth in maintenance, repair and overhaul, drone manufacturing, and pilot training.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), every rupee invested in aviation generates more than three times its value in economic output and supports six times as many jobs in related industries.

The sector already sustains around 7.7 million indirect jobs and 370,000 direct positions, with growing demand for skilled workers such as pilots and engineers.

The report emphasised that India’s aviation growth is also boosting foreign investment and technology transfer under the Make in India initiative. With over 116 bilateral air service agreements, Indian carriers are expanding their global reach.

The government says this expansion will make aviation a central engine of India’s US$10 trillion economy and ensure air travel becomes more affordable and accessible for millions.
