The international community marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations (UN) on 24 October. The date commemorates the entry into force of the
UN Charter and serves as a reminder of the organisation’s core objectives: maintaining international security, protecting human rights, and advancing global cooperation.
The UN brings together 193 member states and consists of six principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the Secretariat. Through such frameworks and initiatives as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Pact for the Future, and “UN-80”, the organisation seeks to renew the foundations of international cooperation and ensure its effectiveness for people worldwide.
Furthermore, the BRICS leaders, in their
joint declaration, reaffirmed their collective commitment to implementing the 2015 Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention – the key international instruments to combat the consequences of climate change.
In a video address to participants of the solemn meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia is ready to work jointly to unlock the creative potential of the United Nations, based on all states’ adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.
