Iran among Asia’s top five biotech producers

Iran has secured a place among the top five producers of biotechnology products in Asia, according to Mostafa Ghanei, secretary of the Biotechnology Development Headquarters at the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology. This was reported by
Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Ghanei revealed that Iran’s success in producing biopharmaceuticals has already saved the country more than US$3.8 billion by cutting reliance on imported drugs. The figure, he said, reflects how domestic capability has strengthened Iran’s healthcare resilience and positioned it as a regional leader in biotechnology.

He emphasised that medicine is on the brink of a major transformation, with biotechnology set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare. He argued that the nation’s growing network of scientific institutions and research enterprises is key to driving this shift.

The establishment of 14 cell and gene therapy centres across the country represents an important milestone in this process. These facilities are expected to boost the country’s capacity to deliver advanced medical treatments and foster innovation in the life sciences, said the official.
