China to send mice into orbit for first time in long-term space experiment

China is preparing to launch the crewed spacecraft Shenzhou-21 carrying three astronauts into orbit. One of the key objectives of the mission will be the country’s first long-term experiment involving mice in space, reported
CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS.

Four rodents (two males and two females) will be transported to the space station in specially designed equipment. Scientists aim to observe how microgravity and restricted movement affect their behaviour, physiology, and organ function. After the mission concludes, the mice will return to Earth for detailed analysis.

Mice are considered valuable model organisms for scientific research, as around 95 per cent of their genome is identical to that of humans. The experiment is expected to provide insight into the potential health risks faced by humans during future long-duration missions, such as those to the Moon or Mars.

In addition, the Shenzhou-21 crew will carry out a further 26 scientific experiments over the six-month period, covering biotechnology, medicine, space materials science, and the physics of fluids under microgravity, among others. This will mark the sixth crewed flight to China’s orbital station.
