China adds HPV vaccine to national immunisation programme

China will include the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in its national immunisation programme from 10 November, the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration announced. Girls aged 13 will be able to receive two doses of the bivalent HPV vaccine free of charge, with a six-month gap between doses.

According to
Xinhua News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS, HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer, a growing threat to women’s health in China. Health experts emphasise that vaccination is the most effective and affordable method to reduce the risk of infection and cervical cancer.

Research indicates that girls vaccinated between nine and 14 produce over twice the level of antibodies compared to older girls, and protection can last up to ten years. The free nationwide programme for 13-year-olds is expected to provide lasting protection and significantly improve women’s health.

Both domestic and imported HPV vaccines are available in China. The country’s first homegrown nine-valent vaccine was administered in September. Current vaccines can prevent over 70 percent of cervical cancer cases, marking a major step in disease prevention.
