FAO recognises Brazil’s shaded yerba mate cultivation system as global agricultural heritage

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has formally recognised Brazil’s traditional shaded yerba mate cultivation system in Parana’s Araucaria Forest as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).

The “Shaded Yerba Mate: a Traditional Agroforestry System in Parana’s Araucaria Forest” is Brazil’s second system to gain GIAHS recognition, following the “Apanhadoras de Flores Sempre-Vivas” in Minas Gerais in 2023.

According to the
Brazilian government website, the nomination was prepared through a proposal coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture (MDA), involving local authorities, institutions, family farmers, technical experts, and civil society.

Brazilian authorities emphasised that the recognition underscores the system’s sustainable and equitable land use practices, and the capacity of family farming to maintain forest ecosystems while respecting traditional knowledge.

Officials say that the FAO’s recognition also highlights Brazil’s role in promoting rural development models that balance productivity, environmental conservation, and social equity.
