Ethiopia launches production of unique medicines for Africa

Ethiopia has begun producing critically important medicines that have not previously been manufactured in any African country. This will not only meet the domestic demand of the republic but also enable exports to pharmaceutical markets in other African states. The information was reported by
Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a partner of TV BRICS.

The production is organised in the Kilinto Industrial Park in Addis Ababa. According to the park’s management, as of November 2025, five factories are already operating there, with a total of 28 manufacturers located within the zone.

It is noted that the launch of production will allow Ethiopia to reduce its spending on importing medicines by 60–80 per cent. Domestic products already meet 65 per cent of the needs of the national pharmaceutical supply service.

According to an industry representative, the sector’s growth has been made possible thanks to targeted government support and special incentives for manufacturers.

The industrial park not only hosts pharmaceutical production but also manufactures everything required for the medical sector – from diagnostic equipment and medical devices to packaging for medicines.
