Lavrov: Russia notes growing Laotian interest in cooperation with BRICS and SCO

Russia values Laos’s efforts to establish contacts with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). This was stated in an article by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, “Russia and Laos: 65 Years of Time-Tested Friendship”,
published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Lavrov noted that Laos and Russia have significant potential for further deepening cooperation. To realise this, it is necessary to establish new efficient transport and logistics routes and implement joint investment projects, particularly in the fields of energy, exploration and mineral extraction.

“We see good prospects in implementing a small-scale nuclear power plant project in Laos. […] Options for establishing rail passenger and freight connections between Vladivostok and Vientiane via China are under consideration. The agenda also includes initiatives in information and communication technologies and space exploration,” Lavrov added.

The Minister also mentioned that Russia supports the professional training of Laotian specialists: 100 scholarships are allocated annually for Laotian students to enter Russian universities. By this measure, Laos ranks third among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

“Our 65-year cooperation experience shows that we are capable of tackling the most complex challenges for the benefit of our states and peoples, in the interests of ensuring universal peace and prosperity,” the Minister concluded.

Lavrov recalled that at this year’s SCO summit in Tianjin, the Council of Heads of Member States unanimously granted Laos partner status in the organisation.

According to the minister, Laos, in turn, strengthens the ASEAN-centred cooperation architecture and supports the advancement of Russia’s dialogue partnership with the association.
