G20 summit to highlight AI’s role in advancing sustainable development

In an exclusive commentary for ANI, a partner of TV BRICS, Dipankar Sengupta, Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Jammu, emphasised that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals ultimately depends on the actions and commitments of national governments.

He noted that sustained economic growth and strong political will remain essential foundations for progress. Within this context, he welcomed the inclusion of artificial intelligence for sustainable growth as a key agenda item at the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg.

According to Sengupta, South Africa’s decision to advance this theme reflects a natural continuation of the achievements of the Delhi summit. He highlighted India’s experience as a strong example of how digital innovation can support development outcomes. India’s digital public infrastructure, he said, has demonstrated the value of well-designed digital public goods in improving service delivery and expanding access.

Sengupta stressed that integrating artificial intelligence into such systems can further enhance their efficiency and impact. He described South Africa’s focus on AI as a highly positive step, noting that it aligns with the needs of many countries seeking faster and more reliable mechanisms for delivering public benefits. India’s leadership in shaping this discussion, he added, will be particularly significant, as its digital model offers practical solutions to challenges faced worldwide.

The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which will take place this year on 22–23 November.
