In an exclusive comment to TV BRICS on the sidelines of the G20 summit, Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson to the President of South Africa, emphasised that the global conversation on critical minerals is shifting from extraction to real value creation within Africa. He noted that this agenda is gaining broad international support and now forms a key part of the economic discussions at the summit.
Focusing on the rapidly growing importance of critical minerals for the global green transition, Magwenya stressed that African countries are determined to ensure that they benefit from more than the simple extraction of raw materials. “There is already alignment on the fact that we need to do some value addition on critical minerals. We have to shift away from being extractive economies,” he said, underscoring a shared position with China and several other G20 partners.
According to Magwenya, the G20 platform is proving instrumental in creating momentum for investments in mineral beneficiation across the continent. He expressed confidence that the discussions in Johannesburg will translate into real policy changes and concrete economic opportunities.
“We hope to take forward tangible steps that will see investments flowing into Africa […] and see changes of policy even amongst African governments on how we realise the true developmental benefits out of our critical minerals,” he added.
The TV BRICS International Media Network is an officially accredited media outlet at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, which takes place on 22–23 November.
