Thailand appeals to India for support in obtaining full BRICS membership

Thailand has requested India’s support in obtaining full membership in BRICS. This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand following a meeting between Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and India’s Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

“The Foreign Minister requested India’s support for Thailand’s interest in joining BRICS during India’s Chairmanship of BRICS in 2026,” the Ministry’s website informed.

Both sides noted progress in cooperation since the upgrading of bilateral relations to the level of a strategic partnership. India and Thailand are actively engaged in the fields of politics, trade, investment, science, technology and innovation, and space.

In 2024, during Russia’s BRICS Chairship, Thailand received an invitation to become a partner of the group. The country obtained its new status on 1 January 2025, making use of the BRICS+ format, which allowed states that are not members of the group to participate in dialogue.

India, a member of the group since its foundation, will assume the Chairship on 1 January 2026 and has already begun shaping the agenda.
