Russia and China will jointly work on the preservation of the white crane – the red-crowned crane. A memorandum to this effect was signed by representatives of the Lena Pillars Nature Park (which administers the National Park Kytalyk in Yakutia) and the Poyang Nature Reserve (China) during a visit by the Russian delegation to Jiangxi Province. This was reported by the
press service of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources.
These birds are on the brink of extinction, listed in the Red Book, and included in the list of priority animal species of the Russian federal project “Preservation of biological diversity and development of ecological tourism” under the national project “Ecological well-being”. More than 70 per cent of the world’s red-crowned crane nests are located within the territory of National Park Kytalyk.
The director of Lena Pillars National Park, Arkady Semenov, emphasised that the signing of the document was an important step in the comprehensive monitoring, study, and preservation of the eastern population of the red-crowned crane. In November last year, a similar agreement was concluded with the Chinese national nature reserve Yellow River Delta.
During the visit to the People’s Republic of China, the Russian delegation inspected the birds’ wintering sites at Poyang Lake, took part in the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the study of wetlands and migratory birds of the region, and exchanged experience in the organisation of specially protected natural areas.
In BRICS countries, careful attention is paid to the preservation of animal species that are under threat of extinction. In South Africa, conservation organisation specialists, using sniffer dogs, locate geometric tortoises and rescue them. This species is found only at the southern tip of Africa and is endangered. This was reported by the portal
IOL.
In Iran, in autumn, the Department of Environment resumed the implementation of a national project for the protection of Asiatic cheetahs after a six-year pause. The news was published by the
Tehran Times, a partner of TV BRICS.
In December, a northern white rhinoceros was delivered to Brazil from Chile, reported the portal
Metrópoles, a partner of TV BRICS. It is one of only three individuals born in captivity in all of Latin America. It will be cared for within the framework of an international programme for the conservation of this species.
