Brazil develops video game to introduce schoolchildren to culture of Indigenous peoples

The Federal University of Sao Carlos in Brazil has developed and released a video game designed to introduce primary school pupils (grades 1–5) to the culture of Indigenous peoples. Since 2008, the study of Indigenous history and culture has been mandatory in the country’s primary and secondary schools. This was reported by
Agencia Brasil.

The new game is a 2D platformer. The main character is a boy from the Yanomami people, who protects the tropical forests of the Amazon.

The game development project is led by Professor Maria Silvia Cintra Martins from the Faculty of Literature at UFSCar. The idea emerged in response to a long-standing request from primary school teachers for more high-quality materials on Indigenous history for use in the classroom.

“As a lecturer who trains early childhood education teachers, I understand the need for additional materials so that teachers can, in essence, comply with the law,” she notes.

This is already the third game in a series of educational projects by the university’s laboratory aimed at supporting teachers. Maria Silvia notes that extensive research was conducted prior to the game’s development in order to present the culture of the Yanomami people accurately.
