Egypt to introduce green label for plastic products

Work has begun in Egypt to introduce a national ‘green label’ certification system for plastic products and packaging. This was reported by the Ministry of Environment following the first meeting of a special committee, according to
Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS.

CEO of Egypt’s Waste Management Regulatory Authority Yasser Abdalla stated that the green label will be awarded to products that meet one of three criteria: contain recycled materials, have a design that facilitates disposal, or are fully biodegradable. According to the authorities, this will encourage manufacturers to shift towards more sustainable production models and reduce the accumulation of plastic waste.

The implementation of the initiative involves Egypt’s Ministry of Industry and Ministry of Environment, as well as relevant organisations responsible for standardisation and export and import control.

The system also aims to reduce carbon emissions by manufacturers, increase compliance with environmental standards, and strengthen the competitiveness of Egyptian exports. Technical guidelines for the green labelling system were published in November 2024, and the packaging guidelines were completed in November 2025. The certification scheme will be implemented in stages to facilitate compliance for manufacturers.
