India moves aviation sector towards sustainability as 93 airports adopt 100% green energy

India has significantly advanced its sustainable aviation agenda, with 93 airports across the country now operating on 100 per cent green energy, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, informed Parliament.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the minister said that four major airports have achieved Level 5 carbon accreditation, the highest global standard, and are now recognised as carbon neutral, as reported by
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.

The government has also approved indicative blending targets for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in conventional aviation fuel, beginning with international flights. The targets provide for blending levels of 1 per cent by 2027, 2 per cent by 2028, and 5 per cent by 2030, reinforcing India’s long-term decarbonisation strategy for air transport.

Murlidhar Mohol noted that a Greenfield Airport Policy has been adopted to guide the development of new airports nationwide. Under the policy, proposals submitted by state governments or private proponents are reviewed by the Ministry of Civil Aviation in coordination with relevant departments and regional authorities before approvals are granted.

According to the minister, the expansion and modernisation of airport infrastructure – including greenfield projects – form a strategic pillar of the Viksit Bharat vision, aimed at promoting inclusive economic growth and strengthening regional connectivity.

Large-scale greenfield airports are also expected to catalyse industrial and urban development in surrounding areas by enhancing connectivity, supporting logistics corridors and attracting investment.

In parallel, the government is fostering an aircraft manufacturing ecosystem, including regional transport aircraft and associated equipment, as part of national industrial development efforts. Policy measures such as tax rationalisation, regulatory simplification, facilitation for foreign aviation specialists, and streamlined procedures for maintenance and repair activities have been introduced to support the sector.
