The government will allocate US$7.8 million to support rural development through increased agricultural production and higher value addition. The announcement was made by Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Mthuli Ncube during the presentation of the 2026 national budget. This is reported by
The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to the minister, the funding will be directed toward projects focused on agricultural processing, with the aim of increasing rural incomes and creating sustainable employment.
The initiative forms part of the governmental programme, designed to curb migration from rural areas to cities and stimulate economic activity at the local level. The programme brings together measures targeting agricultural development, entrepreneurship and rural infrastructure.
The Agricultural and Rural Development Authority plans to set up 35,000 Village Business Units (VBUs), 9,600 School Business Units (SBUs) and 450 irrigation schemes nationwide. The initiative includes the creation of one-hectare, self-sustaining VBUs equipped with solar-powered boreholes to support horticulture development in rural areas.
The source states that particular emphasis will be placed on expanding irrigation systems and introducing modern agricultural technologies, which are expected to improve productivity and reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks.
