Vietnam sees potential to boost banana exports to US$1 billion

Experts consider that with increased investment, expanded processing capacity and access to new export markets, Vietnam’s banana exports could approach US$1 billion. This is reported by
Vietnam News Agency (VNA), a partner of TV BRICS.

Bananas have been identified as a priority crop under the Project for the Development of Key Fruit Crops to 2025, with a vision extending to 2030. The plan provides for expanding plantation areas to 165,000–175,000 hectares and increasing production to 2.6–3 million tonnes by 2030.

According to the source, Vietnam currently produces around 2.8 million tonnes of bananas annually, with plantation areas and yields continuing to grow. Experts attribute this trend to rising market demand and improving production capacity.

In 2024, banana exports generated approximately US$372–378 million, ranking fourth among Vietnam’s exported fruits. According to Nguyen Quoc Manh, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the total area under banana cultivation nationwide is expected to reach around 163,000–163,500 hectares by 2025, with annual output projected at about 2.75 million tonnes.

Production will be concentrated in major agricultural regions, including river deltas and central areas. Under the national seed programme to 2025, with a vision to 2030, efforts are focused on developing high-yield, high-quality crop varieties with resistance to Panama disease.
