Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang Province, has been included in the United Nations’ list of the world’s top 20 cities advancing towards zero waste, according to local environmental authorities. The recognition comes under the “20 Cities Towards Zero Waste” initiative supported by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste.
In an official communication, the advisory board noted that Hangzhou stood out for its long-term commitment to waste reduction and for promoting inclusive, sustainable and innovative approaches to waste management.
Home to more than 12.6 million residents and a major economic centre, Hangzhou has implemented a comprehensive system for managing solid waste and improving resource efficiency. This is reported by

Officials attributed the results to the integration of digital technologies into waste classification and recycling processes. The city operates a smart waste management system that enables real-time monitoring of thousands of waste collection points, transport vehicles and treatment facilities, allowing for more efficient sorting, transportation and disposal of waste.
The UN advisory board also confirmed that Hangzhou’s experience will be officially presented as a global case study during events marking the International Day of Zero Waste on 30 March.
