The Indonesian government has announced plans to maintain national rice reserves at around four million tonnes through 2029, supported by an earlier-than-usual harvest and a projected increase in production in 2026. This is reported by
VNA, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to officials, the nationwide rice harvest is expected to begin in February, nearly a month ahead of the traditional March start, and continue through April. The accelerated timeline is forecast to lift national rice output by between five and ten per cent compared with the previous year, reflecting favourable agricultural conditions and improved production management.
The anticipated surplus has prompted authorities to scale up storage capacity to ensure effective stock management. The government has ordered the construction of around 100 new rice warehouses to address existing limitations in national storage infrastructure. State institutions, including the armed forces, are set to assist in accelerating the development process to ensure facilities are operational in line with the harvest.
Alongside infrastructure expansion, the government is strengthening its rural distribution system by mobilising village-based cooperatives to act as local custodians and distributors of rice. Thousands of such cooperatives are currently being equipped with the necessary infrastructure, with construction and site preparation expected to be completed by April.
Officials say the cooperative programme plays a central role in the country’s food policy, aiming to support rural communities, create jobs and reduce poverty. By improving access to essential commodities and ensuring efficient distribution, the initiative is also intended to help stabilise inflation and improve farmers’ incomes.
The measures form part of a broader strategy to reinforce Indonesia’s food security, reduce market volatility and ensure sufficient rice reserves amid rising demand and climate-related uncertainties.
